The country's military intelligence service, Cifas, has issued a three-year framework agreement worth roughly €7.4 million for high-resolution commercial satellite imagery - optical, infrared, and radar - to support fire-support targeting. What's notable isn't the dollar figure, which is modest by defense-contract standards, but the supplier architecture: Vantor takes the largest share at 40%, Airbus covers European optical capacity at 30%, and the remaining 30% is split across a genuinely diverse high-revisit constellation bench - Planet Labs, BlackSky, Satellogic, Iceye, and Capella Space. The requirement for sub-48-hour tasking turnaround and digital surface models tells you this isn't archival imagery for planning; it's operationally-tempo targeting data. For any company competing in the European commercial ISR space, this is a template worth studying: a mid-sized NATO member deliberately spreading risk and capability across seven providers rather than locking into one.
- Meanwhile, the United States is doubling down on the space layer itself. On September 1, the U.S. Space Force selected Leonardo DRS to develop a space-based sensor purpose-built to detect and track fast-moving, maneuvering threats in orbit. The award sits inside the broader Space Combat Power initiative - 13 contracts worth more than $500 million in total - aimed squarely at compressing the "sensor-to-shooter" kill chain. Leonardo DRS didn't disclose the specific contract value, but the strategic intent is unambiguous: Washington wants persistent custody of maneuvering orbital targets, not periodic snapshots. That's a meaningfully different sensor requirement than the imaging constellations Spain is buying into, and it points to a bifurcating market - commercial-grade Earth observation for tactical targeting on one side, and hardened, government-grade space-domain-awareness sensors on the other.
- The third data point comes from the aircraft side of the EO/IR world. Taiwan has begun testing the MS-110 multispectral reconnaissance pod on its F-16V fleet, a significant upgrade to long-range day/night reconnaissance capability in a theater where airborne ISR reach matters as much as raw sensor resolution. It's a reminder that even as space-based ISR gets the headlines, podded electro-optical and infrared reconnaissance on crewed platforms remains very much a live procurement category - and one where Indo-Pacific demand is only growing.

Global defense revenues hit a record $700 billion in 2025, up 11.3% year-on-year, propelled by sustained spending increases across the U.S. and Europe.
